Rob: If I had to guess why Jamaicans, Pakistanis, Indians, etc. have been treated "fairly well" when compared to Poles I would comment that:

- Yes, they probably have been treated a bit better. Why? ...

- Especially in the case of Indians and Pakistanis but Jamaica, too... these were all British colonies for a time and while I'm not British... perhaps Brits naturally expected some Indians, Pakistanis, and so on to come to England since the English had gone to their country and taken it over? Over time "some" ended up to be quite a lot, but it wasn't necessarily over the course of just a year or two.

- When "those other" immigrants came to England, perhaps the English felt they were doing jobs that no one else wanted to do. Although it is fairly rare for a Pole to, say, step into a management role (although some friends of mine did just that and claim they are a bit resented for it) ...so I don't know what hard-working or boring and low-paying jobs the British wanted to do so badly.

That's basically it. I just think everyone else came over slowly and the English got used to it a bit. Unfortunately I think the onus is on the Poles in the UK to be very, very nice (nicer than their hosts!), to respect and abide by all the silly laws and so on. Oh and maybe introduce the British to pirogies or some new foods? The British seem to love their "curries" and I bet that helped to make all the Indian people seem a bit more less like a threat and more like a good cultural addition.

Just some thoughts, that's all.

This post starts interestingly but progresses to some completely insane conclusions. (Or no conclusions at all, just ranting without an aim)

When you diagnose anti-Polish sentiments it's all fine, but when it comes to a home-made socio-historical analysis it all falls apart. There is no clear message, and there is a lot of crappy-crap that's crap as fuck:) What is your point exactly?

What do you mean by communists being present at British universities? Do you mean leftist cultural critics? Have you been at a Polish university recently? Did you read Krytyka Polityczna?

What has the experience of WW2 got to do with nazi ideas being present in society? I faced a group of 60 Polish nazi skinheads in my Polish home town on a civil rights demo. Thats for your heroic nation.

You call former migrants as "opportunists of servile nature who could or would not find themselves comfortable in the independent countries they actually come from." How would you call yourself then?

And what do you mean "especially if you are second generation of naturalised Europeans"?

Please THINK before you write something. Then wrote it, put it in the drawer, and read it again. Your style is a mess.

As a 'native', I've been sickened for years by the xenophobia of some of our media - but to give this some context, remember that this increasingly reflects the views of a few rich men who own much of the world's media (eg, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp - tip: for UK media, don't read the sun, the mail, the express - do read The Guardian... ). Why is it important to remember this? Because most British people are NOT LIKE the vision reflected in these rags.

Well said! I support everything you say here - and please do keep writing your blog, I think it's really important to get your unique perspective and equally important to stand up and speak out against these narrow interests.

Hi Brad,

it's sorry to know you get the same in Krakow, I really like Krakow (I'm Pole) and If I were about to move out of the UK I would probably choose Wroclaw or Krakow :)

I personally think that what you get is the same what we, Poles, had been getting before we moved out of there - Poles are generally quite rude nation - I mean within families we are very hospitable and we as a nation are known of being hospitable towards guests, but unfortunately in public life (authorities, inland revenue offices, universities etc.) there is a lot to improve...

The difference in the UK though is that for some reason the UK was not so xenophobic over the last 40-50 years for black, indian, pakistani etc. immigration influx, while now when it came to the 'Eastern Europeans' it is so different... I wonder why?

I know how you feel about all that xenophobia and hostile feelings towards foreigners. I get a lot of that here in Krakow, since I'm originally from America. It's so hard to tell if people are rude to me because they're just rude to everyone or if it's specifically because I'm not Polish.

I just discovered your blog and look forward to reading more.

You do realise illegal child trafficing happens all the time right? Most of the time from Africa. The Punjabi word for white man is 'Gora'. Gora also means fair skinned. For all we know it could be a fair skinned north Indian!

The fact that racism exists among British football supporters has no bearing on the truth or falsity of the claim that racism exists among Polish football supporters.

Britain has had a problem with racism and violence in football crowds for decades (although probably exaggerated). This doesn't mean that Poland doesn't have one too.

I think you do yourself a disservice by using such vitriolic language to attack an easy target that has little to do with the point. I for one would find your views more persuasive if you concentrated on presenting the facts that back up your objection. I would honestly like to know. I've heard a lot about Polish football violence but I have no clear idea of whether it's a fact or not or whether it's exaggerated.
