Polish migrants in the UK – a hot topic?

By fieldhand

Two days ago (27/03/2008) a friend called me at 9pm to tell me that BBC Radio4 launched a huge discussion panel on Polish migrants in the UK. How the British economy depends on ‘borrowed’ labour, etc.

Seems like nothing new to me, but I would never expect such a credit from BBC, that usually approaches the topic of Poles in the UK in a ,anner which I would struggle to call kind.

Now, what would be the reason for presenting ‘Eastern Europeans‘ as a valuable asset contributing to Britain’s wealth in the ‘crisis’ year 2008? Sure, mostly politics, for it is election year, etc. But not only that.

Poles, of which majority was at that time on lowest UK national wage £5.05/£5.25 per hour in the tax year 2006/2007 contributed £6,200,000,000 in income tax only. This is twice as much as UK Government is actually spending on war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I just put one article in the ‘Myths’ section:

Poles put huge strain on housing and public services (math case)

(but it is to be continued)
